Take that…
We’ve had a week of indigenous art activism at the BVRG, courtesy of Melbourne/nee Geraldton WA artist Brian McKinnon (a seriously cool and interesting dude – we’ll be getting him back, for sure)…
and a return visit from Armidale artist Michael Brogan…
It’s been a continuation of The New Black: take 2 program, aimed at encouraging local indigenous artists to consider their work in terms of a contemporary social context (as opposed to churning out ‘tourist art’.)

Meanwhile we put Michael on the plane at Sparrows Fart this morning (6.30 am), bringing to an end a week of serial lunching…

The Gang enjoyed a glorious coastal day today doing the cultural rounds with visiting artist (and mentor of the BVRG’s New Black program) Michael Brogan. Highlights were a visit to Tom Bosman’s studio…
…where Megsie was checking out Tom’s work for a show later in the year…
…and the serious business of lunch at Tathra with Brigitte and Klaus (who was just back from SOFA Santa Fe)…
All that lovely sunshine, so good for body and soul.

Matthew Jones wins FSCLAP scholarship…
The coastal arts heavies gathered at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery on Friday for the announcement of the winner of the Far South Coast Living Artist Project scholarship…drum roll…Matthew Jones.
A popular choice by all accounts, though of course all of the short-listed artists were well in the running. So Matt now certainly has his work cut out – given that he already has a two-man show coming up at the BVRG in February (with glassie Bernadette Foster.) Mind you, he’s an incredibly focused, organised and prolific maker so he no doubt relishes the looming workload.

Design Media in Australia

Design Media in Australia is an exhibition promoting published design in Australia. The exhibition will model itself on a trade fair where Australia’s premier design magazines have been asked to create a free standing installation for a person to interact with their product.
The maximum allocated space for each title is 1.8 x 1.8 meters squared. As the installations will be made off site it is intended that they work in a free standing space and not be dependent of the fixed walls in the gallery.
Published design in Australia collates and presents the design activity of the nation throughout the year. Covering all areas of design these published titles are full of ideas and discourse for you to discover and devour at the Gallery of Australian Design.
Invited titles include:
Architecture Australia, Houses, Artichoke, Landscape Architecture Australia, Indesign, DQ, Habitus, Oz Graphix , Green, Desktop Magazine, Inside, Architectural Review, King Brown, Wooden toy, Blank, Empty, Orphan and Process Journal.

Gelati break…
The Gang was in Bermagui yesterday for the final stage of the FSCLAP’sholarship process; interviewing the short-listed finalists.

Anyhoo, it was a very interesting day.
The winner will be announced at a special lunchtime event (12 noon) at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery on Friday 23rd of July.
Shane’s portrait of Megsie…
A few months ago lovely Steve Fox from Mogo Raw Art brought Shane (Gruber) for a visit to the Bega Valley Regional Gallery, where we discussed the possibility of his inclusion in The Footy Show, a team exhibition opening on August 13. We’re very excited to report that Shane’s sending in four drawings for the show, and he’s also penned this ripper likeness of Megsie…
