Class reunion: Steve Klein downunder…

This post is kind of like an inverse Foreign Correspondence…

Steve Klein, who’s out in Oz to give kiln-forming workshops in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, has just been down to the Far South Coast with wife Diana for a bit of R&R (before heading back to Sydney to kick off the business end of the trip.)

The Gang first met Steve over at Pilchuck in 2004, when he was TAing for Klaus’s workshop – and so the visit was a rather nice mini-class-reunion. We spent a lovely couple of days introducing them to all the local charms: chucking them in gaol/jail, taking them to the Australasia, etc, etc (…anyone who’s been down to stay will know the drill!!)

And, obviously, it was also all about Steve catching up with the Klaus-meister…

The weather held out, the mussels were huge and the great Aussie reds nothing less than superlative! Quick pics at…

Meanwhile Steve’s got a neat little film on YouTube – which you can check it out at…

Sexy-genarian central: our other favourite Norwegian turns the big 6-Oh!

Last Saturday night the Gang high-tailed it to Irene Hansen’s 60th birthday bash, hosted by Ximena and Trev over at their joint in Weston. And what a great night it was! And the food!!! Omigod, we won’t eat for a month. Trev was chained to the stove all night – and of course nobody would get out of his kitchen (the mark of every successful party, as we well know!) Sally Musset made the birthday cake – a moist, spiced affair smothered in cream and berries (which finished us off entirely!!)

It was a lovely evening, sweetly offset by Earth Hour – how nice it was to have all the electric lights off and the rooms bathed only in candlelight. It took us straight back to our childhood and teens, to the old chook’s dinner parties (the Olds always used candlelight and antique kero lamps when they entertained.) We’d forgotten how softly atmospheric it is – might have to reinstate it back at the hideout…

[How eco-friendly is paraffin, by the way?]

Cooma rail…

1 04 2008

cute-little-train.jpgfrom-the-car.jpglone-caboose.jpg

On Saturday’s drive across the Monaro, the Gang spotted a cute little train (well, more like a rogue carriage!!) tootling across those gorgeous high plains. How adorable it was – and a sight we’ve not seen for quite some time (that old Bombala-Cooma-Canberra service has been out of action for years now.) Is this an indication that the rail might be re-opened again, even if only on a limited basis? We want to pack a picnic hamper immediately, and book it for a run…

[Note to selves:- be cautious at that seemingly disused railway crossing at Polo Flats from here on in…]
